What is supervision?

Supervision is a relationship between therapists which gives the supervisee a structured support system that encourages their competency and growth through feedback, education and discussion in a safe and confidential environment.

In many branches of therapy, supervision is "for life", therefore it can be thought of as a process designed to help you to be as effective as you can be in your career. When you are just starting out, your supervisor will continue to have a training role, as they share their experience with you. You will be able to share your concerns, doubts and gaps in knowledge, as well as the joy of your successes!

When first becomming involved in a therapy it can be difficult to understand the need for it. It may seem as just another drain on your resources at a time when you want to make money, not spend it!

However supervision can be:

  • Exceedingly beneficial for you
  • Exceedingly beneficial for your clients
  • Valuable to the profession
  • A factor which has a major impact on whether or not you "make it" in this field
  • A way to make connections with other therapists

Many newly qualified therapists have supervision with their trainer. This can be a good idea as this is likely to be someone who you trust and feel comfortable with.

Here are some important points to consider when you select a supervisor:

  • Are they qualified to a high level, both as a therapist and as a trainer?
  • Do you feel safe and comfortable with them?
  • Are you happy with the practical arrangement - e.g. timings, location, method & price?
  • Do you feel that you will get all you need? After all this is what it's about.

What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

Many professional societies specify a requirement that therapists continue to update their training.

NCH says; Hypnotherapists are required to maintain or improve their level of skills and professional competence by:

  • Undertaking formal, continuing training by attending workshops, courses and seminars. And
  • Sharing experiences and exploring such with supervisors/peer-support groups.

An awareness of research and developments in the field of hypnotherapy and associated fields must be maintained.

Even if you're the worlds greatest expert in one thing, there will always be new angles, and related topics that you can learn which will improve your service to your clients.

Here is a list of possible ways of undertaking CPD:

  • Higher level training (e.g. Postgraduate Training)
  • Seminars and workshops on aspects of your therapy
  • Seminars and workshops on related therapies
  • Conferences
  • On-Line learning opportunities
  • Distance learning courses
  • Tapes, CD's and videos
  • Books
